Sometimes my Sitemeter log leads me in an interesting direction. Today I discovered Elenamary. Upon perusing her blog for the first time, I stumbled upon this. (Originally from BlueLatinos.org)
Urban Outfitters recently began selling offensive tee shirts with a slogan: “New Mexico, Cleaner Than Regular Mexico,” conjuring negative and racist ideas of the “the dirty Mexican.” Earlier this year, GUESS Inc. removed a similarly offensive tee shirt from its stores that read: “Ski Colombia-always plenty of fresh powder!” after protests from consumers and people of conscience.
Elenamary asks the question, "What idiot thought this was at all acceptable?" Well, for starters, probably the same team that came up with the Voting is for Old People tshirt. This is really just plain nuts. I'm sure the nativist, immigrant hating Tom Tancredo probably sports this tshirt while drinking beers with his Minutemen buddies. It's almost as if Urban craves the controversy. Most companies I can think of don't go out and try to offend different sections of society. But then again, they probably don't really care anyway, as their target demographic is probably rich, young, suburban white people. Or as they would be called in Rick Santorum's world, "normal people".
