I know this is all over the place today, but something at AMERICAblog cought my eye. From Reuters:
Sources said the timing of an announcement had been moved up in part to deflect attention away from a CIA leak controversy that has engulfed Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove.A Republican strategist with close to the White House described Clement as the leading candidate. "She's pretty untouchable," he said. "Plus, it helps take Rove off the front pages for a week."
Why would they aim for only a week? I would want that distraction to be permanent if I were Bush, wouldn't you? And whomever the nominee might end up being, having an "untouchable" quality wouldn't fit into a true deflection campaign. Brown was confirmed in 2001 by a 99-0 vote, so I don't think there will be much controversy this time around.
Me thinks that "those in the know" might be settling on the fact that the Rove story is only going to keep snowballing. After a one week break, of course.
